Specifications

Ivermectin paralyses and ultimately kills parasitic nematodes and arachnids by a unique effect on nervous systems of parasites.

Physical property A colourless clear liquid

Pharmacological action

Ivermectin paralyses and ultimately kills parasitic nematodes, arachnids and insects by a unique effect on the nervous systems of these parasites. At the therapeutic dosage, Ivermectin is well tolerated by livestock, since it does not readily penetrate the central nervous system. Ivermectin is structurally unrelated to any of the currently available anti-parasitics. Because of this and of its unique mode of action, which is not shared by any other antiparasitic agents, cross-resistance is unlikely.

Therapeutic indications

In Cattle: Gastrointestinal round worms; cattle grubs; screw-worm fly lice; mites; ticks; biting lice.

In Sheep: Gastrointestinal round worms; lung worm; sheep nose bot; mange mites.

In Camels: Gastrointestinal roundworms; mange mites.

Administration and Dosage

For subcutaneous injection. The general dose is 1 ml per 50 kg body weight in cattle, sheep and camels.

Side-effects Transitory discomfort has been observed in some livestock following subcutaneous administration. Occasional cases of soft tissue swelling at the injection site have been observed. Behaviour suggesting pain, sometimes intense but usually transient, has been observed in some sheep. These effects disappear without treatment.

Precautions If milk is to be used for human consumption, do not use in lactating cows. Since no milk withholding period has been specified, do not treat sheep of breeding age that will produce milk for human consumption. Camels producing milk for human consumption should not be treated. Trials have not been conducted to demonstrate safety in breeding camels. This product is not to be administered intravenously or intramuscularly. Adequate vaccination of sheep against clostridial infections is strongly recommended. Keep out of reach of children.
